A review of the JB College Tour to Millersville and Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences

On March 28th, 30 JB juniors and sophomores attended a college trip. In the morning, students went to Millersville University for a tour and information session. In the afternoon, students split up - half went to Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology and the other half went to Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences. College Ambassador Melody gives us some general information on the two colleges she toured - MU and PCHS.

Millersville University Tour:
We first went to the visitors center and got an introduction. It included a very informational powerpoint presentation. We then proceed on a guided tour that lasted about an hour. It included the pond, most of the academic buildings, the stadium and the theatre.

Another thing that we got to see on our tour was the rooms. They showed us a room from the current dormitory style rooms and a sample room of the suite style rooms that the new residence halls will have. The dormitory style rooms were small and were just a single room. The bathroom was shared with the other 20 residents of the same gender. In the suite style rooms there are multiple rooms for all the roommates and they had a bathroom to share. Instead of sharing a bathroom with 40 people, you would only share with 3 other people

Pennsylvania College of Health Sciences:
Tour: The school itself is very small, which makes it easy to navigate around. The classrooms were a pretty decent size and they had very high tech equipment. They had 14 dummies to practice on, which is a lot for such a small student body. The dummies are robotic and teach you how to practice medicine on patients. The benefit of the small student body size and large amount of dummies is that all students have an opportunity for a lot of time with the dummies and instructors. Also, the students get a lot of clinical time. This helps them prepare for being out in the field. It’s fairly close to home, It’s around 2 ½ hours away, but it’s in Lancaster so there is plenty to do. The only down side is there are no residence halls. They do however help students get housing close by in Lancaster city.

An Inside Look at Attending an Open House

College Ambassador Sarah attended Millersville University's Junior Preview Day. Here are her thoughts on the experience, as well as tips on how to book your own college visit!

Last Saturday I had the opportunity to visit Millersville University for their Junior Preview Day. Millersville University is a 4 year, public university and liberal arts college, located in Millersville, PA, about two hours away from Mercersburg. It is located in a rural area and offers associate, bachelor’s, and master’s degrees. Some of their most popular majors are social sciences, business, and education.
The morning started off with a talk from the deans from all four of the different departments. All of them gave some great points about their departments, but I think the Dean of Science and Mathematics was my favorite speaker. He was really funny gave us a lot of information about new technology and new classes that are available at Millersville. After that, we were split into groups and our group went to eat lunch at the Bistro on campus.

After lunch, we started a campus tour. We got to visit a bunch of different buildings including the library, several classrooms, and a few dorm rooms. We even got to see the model dorm rooms which will be replacing the older ones on campus. Our tour guide was very friendly and gave us a tour that included lots of information about what college life is like for students who live on campus. Millersville had a very friendly atmosphere and I could definitely picture myself as a student there. Overall, I had a great experience and I would encourage anyone interested in Millersville to take a tour of their beautiful campus!
I would recommend that anyone who is interested in a specific school should make sure that they go for a visit. I heard about Millersville's Junior Preview day through an email, but there are other ways to get a college tour. The easiest way would be to simply go on to the college's website and look around. Many colleges have links on their websites for information about college tours and people that you can contact. Visiting a college can be a deciding factor in your school choice so don't overlook it! If you have any questions about scheduling a visit with a school, talk to Miss Loh in the Guidance Office.

College Profile: Elizabethtown College

On March 26, Miss Loh had the opportunity to attend a counselor workshop at Elizabethtown College. Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Troutman attended the event as well. Elizabethtown provided a wonderful tour about their institution. Here are some basic facts about the College, as well as some photos from the trip.

Location: Elizabethtown, PA (1 hour, 34 min from JBHS - 91 miles)
Motto: "Educate for Service"
Mascot: Blue Jay
Population: 1900 students
Student:Faculty Ratio: 12:1 (average class size = 16 students)

Reasons to Consider Elizabethtown College:

  • 95% of Elizabethtown graduates on average are employed or in graduate school within eight months of graduation.
  • The College offers something called "Signature Learning Experiences." In order to ensure you are engaged at the College for all four years, students are required to complete two of the five experiences:
    • Supervised Research with a faculty mentor
    • Internship, Field Placement, or Practicum to utilize the skills you have learned in the classroom
    • Cross-Cultural Experience (study abroad)
    • Community-Based Learning where you can engage in community service
    • Capstone Course, Project, or Development Portfolio so you can integrate the knowledge you have accumulated over the course of your four years at the college
  • Are you interested in OT, PT, or Music Therapy? Elizabethtown offers great, competitive pre-professional programs in these areas!
  • About 50% of Elizabethtown students receive merit aid
  • The College offers competitive D3 sports programs
  • Popular events include: Mr. E-Town (male beauty pageant), dance concerts, Thank God its Spring weekend festival, and a Thanksgiving dinner served by the College administration and faculty
If you want to learn more, go to: www.etown.edu or see Miss Loh for a brochure!

There's a pond in the middle of campus!

Elizabethtown contains one of the largest mineral museums in Central PA
