Each Monday, we will spotlight a major that students from JB are interested in. Many kids wonder what they can do with a major, so these "Major Monday" blog posts will cover what the major entails, types of courses, and what you can do with the major after college!

What is the business major?
According to College Board, business is "the study of buying, selling, and producing goods, as well as the study of business organization and accounting. Business majors learn how to use the basic principles and techniques of business in a variety of workplaces." Most business majors learn how to work with profit-making and nonprofit organizations.

What types of courses do business majors take? 
Accounting, Finance, Marketing, Public Relations, Human Resources, Organizational Behavior, Quantitative Methods, Consumer Psychology, International Business, Risk Management, Actuarial Science, and more!

What can I do after college with a business major?
Majoring in business increases your leadership and communication skills and increases your math expertise. With a major in business, students generally improve their computer skills, as well as their interpersonal abilities. Equipped with these skills, here are some examples of job titles people have taken after majoring in business:

  • Analyst

What should I do in high school to prepare for this major?
Job shadow a business owner or someone who works in finance. Consider taking the Personal Finance course offered at JB. Read newspapers' financial sections or the Wall Street Journal. There are a ton of ways to prepare!
